Johnny Cash and Country Stig Nielsen DR2

The best tv-channel in Denmark, DR2, has dedicated this saturday evening to legend Johnny Cash. A whole lot of more or less important danish singer-songwriters interpret some Cash-songs but most interessting is songwriter Country Stig Nielsen. He is young but already a country-legend in Århus, where he for years has toured small bars, cellars and minor venues with his dark Americana mythology and spiritual longings in a blend of folk, alt. country, roots, blues and spirituals.
CS Nielsen is to release an album of self-penned songs entitled "Against the Dying of the Light" later this year. The album was produced by Jacob Horney and mixed by Morten Maltesen (Lundgaard Studios).
I think you should listen to four of the tracks on his myspace-thingy, here. CS Nielsen is great!

Roskilde Festival - Basement Jaxx and Klaxons

In a boring danish weekdayshow called Aftenshowet the spokesman from Roskilde Festival just announced two new names for this years festival. I've expected some really hot news here, but it was only Klaxons and Basement Jaxx - well, both are quite fine by me, but I still wait and hope for Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, The Good the Bad & The Queen... latest rumors has it that Metallica will stop by...

    BRMC is back

Grrrrreat news for everybody! The ultra-cool Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is from this day streaming two new songs from their up-coming album 'Baby 81'. The follow-up on 2005's magnificent 'Howl' is due April 30.

You can listen to "Weapon of Choice" and "666 Conducer" here

Infographic in awesome musicvideos Royksopp Longcut

I found one old musicvideo and one new that both uses infographics to tell their stories. They are quite similar but both are artistic masterpieces and wellworth a few minutes.
We love Liverpool more than Manchester, but these mancunians in The Longcut does a good job with their single 'A Triedy And Tested Method' - a pleasant and mellow slice of work. The video tells the story of a boy and a girl falling for each other.
The second video is 'Remind Me' from Royksopp with our allstar norwegian singer Erlend Oye delivering lazy vocal on this electronic downbeat hit off the Melody A.M album (2002).
The infographic used is very clever and strike me as having some resemblance to a Kraftwerk'ish universe. Mensch Machine. Loves this way of telling stories. Enjoy.

"Soft Focus" with Bonnie Prince Billy on VBS.TV

Since many, including my "laundry" mates, love Will Oldham a.k.a. Bonnie Prince Billy, I need to write this comment on the VBS.TV article below. `Cause there is a quite funny four part interview on the VBS show "Soft Focus". See part 1 here.

Spike Jonze, Lance Bangs, the new VBS.TV, and stolen gear

With idealistic slogans like "Rescuing you from televion´s deathlike grib" and "Saving your eyes from the blinding pain of television" they are really up for a challenge, Spike Jonze, Lance Bangs and the rest of VBS.TV , which was launched under two weeks ago. Their main focus is culture in a wide wiew, and not at least what they´re calling "the best of the music world" (which include the first episode of Bangs show about stolen music gear)

It could get to be a really interesting site (besides what it already is). According to VBS themself, people have called it "eclectic, smart, funny, shocking, and revolutionary" as to which VBS responded (guess according to who? :-)): "we kind of just snapped our fingers in their faces and went, “Whatever. Tell us something we don’t know.”

A really up-beat and tongue-in-cheek attitude. Hopefully they can mix it with (their and other) talents. But for now I will send my readers to VBS and leave an open question for VBS: "will you be able to put a deathlike grib and a blinding pain on me?". I hope so!

    Mapping Sufjan Stevens

Recently I've been enjoying Sufjan Stevens more and more. I found that Chicago Public Radio did a 1-hour radio special called 'Mapping Sufjan Stevens' which goes in depth with the guy. It answers different questions, among them how he got such a weird name.

    Valentines music mp3

It's valentine and we are all for flowers, candlelights and seduction here. But. We are all in some kind of relationship, so we don't really bother to much about the latter. So I found this little gem of a mp3 - a filthy little ballad, which will ruin your date completely. Or just make the both of you laugh. It's a classic spoofy song.

  • Tenacious D - Fuck her gently
  • Ryan Adams theme morning song

Ryan Adams - who else - has updated the theme song on his website. It's a jolly and truely sitcom-careless song approximately called "Today Is A New Day On Ryan Minus Adams Dot Com." Top of the morning to ya!

Camera Obscura live from KEXP mp3

I forgot yesterday evening that I really love Camera Obscura from Glasgow, so this morning I was pleased to find some darn hot live recordings from yesterdays session at KEXP.
I only have Underachievers Please Try Harder on my cd-shelf and that is a lovely sounding record. Sweet, melodic and memorable indie pop record. But a couple of years ago I had a indiepop breakdown, but now that I'm better, I think I should get myself Let's Get Out of This Country.
It's all very Belle & Sebastian'ish, but it's up there competing with the best in the genre. Tracyanne Campbell simply writes amazingly intimate and tender ballads. Have a listen on the tracks from yesterday - all fresh and in good quality too.

  • Arcade Fire live on NPR

While we here at Indie Laundry are kind of pissed that the Arcade Fire concert in march now is to be held in K.B. Hallen instead of the more intimate Vega - of course only due to pure greed - we are delighted to mention that our favorite radio NPR is doing a webcast with Arcade Fire on saturday feb. 17.
Of course we are aware of the fact that K.B. Hallen will hold a lot more Arcade Fire fans, but the sound is just so poor. Well, we'll see... last time I was there was in 2000 for a Radiohead-concert. And that was pretty amazing. But their set wasn't really as layered and orchestrated as that of Arcade Fire.

Steve Jobs took over musicindustry DRM spin tactic

Well, this is an entry on a surprising statement from Apples CEO Steve Jobs posted yesterday, challenging the music industry to abandon DRM (copy protection) on digital music downloads. The tactic is of course self-serving but nontheless Steve Jobs has some points to make. It's a wellwritten essay and an intriguing and aggressive strategic move on the part of Apple.
I think that Steve Jobs just took over the music industry with his statement yesterday and gave Microsoft a big fuck you.

He outlines three possible futures for digital music:
1: Keep going as things are now with each manufacturer competing freely with their own “top to bottom” proprietary systems for selling, playing and protecting music.
2: Apple licenses FairPlay to other companies.
3: Sell music online without DRM Abolish DRMs entirely - according to Jobs, this is clearly the best alternative for consumers, and Apple would embrace it in a heartbeat.

Jobs’ statement is clearly self-serving; the company has faced criticism and legal battles from several European nations over its monopolization of digital music formats. Nevertheless, Jobs move demonstrates his intuitive mastery of public relations, redirecting criticism of Apple’s mnopolization of digital music to the record labels and their licensing restrictions.
And this is now I could draw similar references to the spin-tactic as practiced by the danish primeminister Anders Fogh Rasmussen... but I won't, even though this technic seems to work on all political levels. And in this case Steve Jobs is on our side.
So as long that Jobs and Apple don't forget what's good for us is good for their business, I think it's something we can all live with.

Danish electronic music Band Ane Alice Rose - pros and cons

Something is happening with girls and laptopmusic in Denmark. I'm on the verge of calling it a movement and label it girltronica, but that wouldn't be serious, just plain silly, right? On the opposite girls just twist their laptops differently. Earlier on we have mentioned Band Ane and now we'll top it with Alice Rose, who recently promoted herself at Eurosonic Festival along with 140 other up and coming acts from Europe.
I kind of heart the girltronica way of adressing musicmaking. Putting small fraction of samples in order, playing with beats and genres, weird toys and tiny voices. The method is playful, lo-fi and experimental. But also fragile.
From time to time this fragile thingy annoyes me, because it - on purpose that is - underacts the songstructures own limits and therefore have a tendency to end up broken and way to childish. On a bad sunday these tracks sounds like someone have robbed the musicians dollhouse and left the owner crying for warm milk and a little bleepy musical box song. This is the downside of this 'movement' and nothing devastating, but just a tendency I've been noticing while listening to this music from danish and other girltronic musicians. Judge for yourself.
Both girls are set to play at this years Roskilde Festival.
