Copenhagen smells like women!

If you are so fortunate to live in Copenhagen - you can have an extraordinary spring and summer regarding originale female artists. Truely original female artists are in my eyes quite rare. But last week I saw a brilliant concert with Joanna Newsom. Read my review in danish here. In June the female rock-godmother Patti Smith and one of her followers, Tori Amos, will visit Copenhagen. (And last year the one and only PJ Harvey visited the local opera!)
Apparently both Amos and Smith has a weakness for Nirvana. Try it out and find your favorite. I think Patti Smith's folk-version is the winner!!

The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. The Copyright Royalty Board in Washington, DC has more than tripled the royalty rates for webcasters and left unchanged they will kill Internet radio. The new royalty rates are irrationally high, more than four times what satellite radio pays, and broadcast radio doesn't pay these at all. These exorbitant rates go into effect on May 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). Without Congressional action the majority of webcasters will go bankrupt and silent on this date.Help save netradio - and services such as Pandora, Last.fm, and FineTune. Sign up!

Brightblack Morning Light

I spent this weekend with a couple of my former study pals. That is always good fun and almost a guarantee for musical inspiration as we always talk a LOT about music. The revelation this time around was a desert hippie stoner freak-folk duo Brightblack Morning Light who you can locate in the rural parts of California.

Listening to the extremely chilled out 2006 record "Brightblack Morning Light" (I haven't succeded in writing this name correctly in the first attempt yet...) is feeling great in superslow motion. It is music packed with grooving organs, twangy guitars and dreamy vocals.

As my friend Morten always put it: "As long as it comes from Matador Records, you know it's brilliant".

  • Scottish night in København

If you happen to be around Copenhagen - or live there - go to Loppen tommorow night. Arap Strap-guy Malcolm Middleton plays his scottish melancholy live. I'm not sure it's gonna be on the happy side, but it's definetly worth a go. A newer review of one of his performances by 2 Many Scenes right here.

The world of unclassifiable music - #1

Lately my entries here has been pointing in so many different directions. I've been writing about rap (?!) and more mainstreamy music. I'm glad to announce that this way of putting words down will continue.

I decided to embark on a small and deadly mission called 'The world of unclassifiable music'. I just want to sneak down other trails than the usual backbone in my recordcollection, seen here on last.fm. But also to explore all the small labels around. So the concept is 1 band + 1 label.

I can't promise that all the music presented in this 'The world of unclassifiable music' will apply to any good taste, and I'm not even sure that I'm all for the first duo that I'm about to present.
Opsvik & Jennings is the first pick. The duo is based in New York. They just released "Commuter Anthems", which is a layered, even orchestral, album of instrumental pop music.
Their debut-album was called "Fløyel Files" but now they are more playful and also a bit weird. I guess that's because of their jazz background. Well try them out.
They are released through Rune Grammofon which is worth discovering. They aim to recapture the magic of new and adventorous norwegian artists.

    Helloooo Laura Veirs!

Today I laid my ears cloase on Seattle girl Laura Veirs. She sure has something I want to discover more of.
Her third Nonesuch album Saltbreakers is out today and it struck me that I don't really know her. As with all these nerdy-looking girls she is of course a singer-songwriter. She sings personal stuff, intense and she is both indie, alt-rock, country and has a nice vocal on tight and grungy drum-loops as well. There's enough stuff around to celebrate her, so check her out on Allmusic, on her MySpace for the new tracks and on Amazon when you are ready to buy. There's a couple of older tracks in a hidden directory on her website - direct access here. Of the older stuff the album Carbon Glacier is a standout.

  • Laura Veirs - Galaxies (Year of Meteors)

Hot hot heat - Mims the goofy rapper

Story is that I havn't really heard any new music lately. Just bought some The Shins albums and been digging them a lot more since I recently was told I saw - and enjoyed - their show at Roskilde 2004. Festivals are bliss! Makes you forget about stuff just to surprise you later. I like that aspect of a festival!
But. Today I read a quite amusing article, which is all about why I hate a lot of the new hip-hop shit out there.

Scene is like this: Our mainman is Mims - a hot ass rapper revitalizing the genre from his hood in N.Y. Mims has this new single out called 'This is why I'm hot'. The single is #1 on Billboard.
In an article in Village Voice journalist and genious Rob Harvilla (whoever you are, you're entertaining!) does a graphical dissertation on the number one song in America. The song has this truely fantastic hook: "I'm hot 'cause I'm fly/You ain't 'cause you not."

Rob Harvilla concludes that: Mims is hot because he's fly. But it raises the question: Does being hot guarantee one's being fly? [...] It would appear that fly and hot are interchangable. If you are one, you are both; if you aren't at least one, you are neither.

Well - read it here or just watch the video. It's just so goofy.

    Introducing Cold War Kids mp3

My brother-in-law has been so kind to introduce me to the cool indie-band Cold War Kids. At the same time a very traditional band, with very traditional inspiration, but with their own sound. Allmusic describe their influences as Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Billie Holiday, Velvet Underground and Jeff Buckley! Good taste! It is quite catchy and with substanse as well. Check it out. They play at Vega i Copenhagen on the 9th of May. Buy your ticket here.

    New Grant Lee Phillips mp3

He has done it again. Grant Lee Phillips just cannot write a bad song. Again an album full of great tunes. After his true-to-the-roots Virginia Creeper and the eighties tribute Nineteeneigthiees, he has now released a varied bunch of songs on an allbum called Stranglet. On one of them he even sounds a bit like T-rex! Only a shame he is not as good a producer as a songwriter. So next time, dear hero, hire a producer (and a video-director!)And come to Roskilde Festival - please!!!
