Meet Pela from New York on mp3

Pela sound as if they're from New York. And in fact they are. And they are pretty popular over there in the clubs of Brooklyn.
They say, they are influenced by cranes, sidewalks, cityscapes, subways, warehouses, sex, alcohol, isolation and addiction.
If you havn't met this band before - meet them below. They are totally worth it!

Pela - Lost to the Lonesome (mp3)
Pela - The Trouble With River Cities (mp3)
Pela - Episodes (Diphenhydramine) (mp3)
Pela on myspace

Niobe and her white hats

Niobe makes peculiar sounds, colorful arrangements and unusual vocals. And soon she has the album White Hats out on Tomlab. Yvonne Cornelius was born in Frankfurt and has a uniquely individual approach to electronic production, as well as a style of singing ranging from diva-esque acrobatics to comic excess.

Links to music mp3s Myspace Spacecadetz Discogs and Hunter S. Thompson

I can not manage new bands today, only linkage to surf. Somehow I've been quite low-key since I gave my icelandic friend a hug in the airport and waved goodbye and sent him back home after hard days nights in Copenhagen.

Discogs is "a user-built database of music information. Imagine a site with discographies of all labels, all artists, all cross-referenced. It's getting closer every day." This is the essential site for all you music heads out there. I wish IMDB was this well presented. Good, but lot's of Google Ads.

Spacecadetz. "With 70+ million members and still growing fast, it’s just about impossible to keep track of what’s new and fresh on MySpace, and that’s where SpaceCadetz.com comes in to make your life easier. We bring you the latest and greatest in MySpace, including updates and features on the best indie music groups/artists, MySpace videos, and other stuff in the MySpace community that is actually worth knowing. In other words, we sift through all the crap out there and present the cream of the crop."

And an interessting for read - at least for an old HST-fan: Hunter Thompson was working on WTC collapse story before mysterious sudden death, warned he'd be "suicided".

Donavon Frankenreiter

Hung over? Tired to the bone? Yeah... me too! Try to jazz up your Sunday evening with Donavon Frankenreiter - a new artist from the great americana label, Lost Highway.

You can move yourself by listening to the fucky "Move by yourself" from his upcoming selftitled debut album on his MySpace site. If this makes you tick - and I think it will - this site and his own web site contains bits of the other songs of the album as well.

Think kinda Stevie Wonder meets Ben Harper...-ish.

Speaking of the devil!

Oy! Good news! 26th of June one of my all time favorites Grant Lee Phillips releases a new album, Nineteeneighties, with cover-versions of his greatest influences. Listen to Grant-Lee Phillips’ stunning reworkings of The Pixies’ “Wave of Mutilation,” The Psychedelic Furs’ “Love My Way,” REM’s “So. Central Rain (Sorry),” and many more. I can't wait. It's gonna be a great summer!!

New singer/songwriter star

Yesterdays concert with Josh Ritter at Lille Vega in Copenhagen was great. Josh Ritter showed the respectfull audience that he is a name in the long tradition of singer/songwriters who should be watched in the future. It was on level with Grant Lee Phillips and in my world that is a huge compliment.
Read my longer review in danish here. Or listen to the greatest song on the new album and in yesterdays concert - Thin Blue Flame.

I hate Mel Gibson!

I'm writing a project about We Were Soldiers. It's a fucking piece of crappy neo-conservative propaganda, and I just want a fuckin beer and some good music. Fortunately I'm going to Josh Ritter and Nicolai Dunger concert tonight in Copenhagen with a couple of Indielaundry collegues. Oh, relief! Watch this Ritter-video with me. Great song, silly video - but so much better than Mel Gibson.

The whitest Boy Alive - Erlend Oye downloads

I am kind of puzzled in a good way. It's only three days ago, I posted an entry on the geek Erlend Öye and where he was at. Because I miss him.
The day after entries startet popping up. A good coincidence.
His newest project is based in Berlin and called The Whitest Boy Alive and has some whooping bssline and the great voice of Erlend. The structure is very simple and good for clubs. Love it!

Album called "Dreams" is released in Europe 31. May. Buy the album here.

Hermigervill performs at Reykjavík Trópík 2006 download full albums

This entry is a hot tip. I've been enjoying his music since last year, when Arnar introduced me. Hermigervill is icelandic. His second breiðskífa - record - "Sleepwork" was released 16. september last year.
The style is - with his own words: hiphop-elektróník; sungið og ósungið popp, rokk, hiphop og raf til skiptis. It's intelligent breakbeat electronica and even has some samples from some old danish sitcom in one of the tracks. Can't figure out which.

Hermigervill hasn't released anything new since september 05, but is often performing live. Next time he performs is at Reykjavík Trópík 2006 - a hot (yeah right!) festival taking place 2-4. june. On his website he gives away both of his albums, so better go pick them up. The links are:

Iisole rocks from Dalarne Sweden

Well, Dalarne in Sweden is this terrible idyllic place, which you come to hate in an early stage of life, especially if you ever went there on the backseat of your parents car. And a lot of danish kids had done that. But now something is swinging in a rocking way up there.
Iisole are from Falun, Dalarna. They have all been active in different bands the last couple of years, but three years ago these four guys started playing under the name Iisole and since then they released two eps themselves Iisole got a track on an upcoming compilation CD from Jezbel Recordings. Rock on!

New untitled Erlend Oye Kompis track

Sometimes I think of Erlend Oye and his relaxing voice and chilled down tunes. Perfect for a car ride in the rain or a summer in the sun. I like him as himself as a dj and as part of brilliant collective Kings of Convenience. I decided to hunt him down, but not much is happening around this nerdy guy. But I found some.
Swedish ghettotechs and electroheads in Kompis has a brand new untitled track on their MySpace featuring Erlend Oye. It's a very nice track, so be sure to check it out.

Smog is back

The fabulous one-man-project of Bill Callaghan - Smog - are about to release a new EP on June 13th to be called "Rock Bottom Riser".
The slow-paced lo-fi rock of Smog is always capable of creating a cool, relaxed atmosphere for me so this is very good news, I think.
Almost 20 years into its career, Smog is still going strong which you can witness in these two great videos (Quicktime) from the EP:

I Feel Like The Mother Of The World (.mov)

La Fontaine with Il Bastardo and alternative scandinavian jazz scene

Yesterday Laundry brother Rene and I toured around Copenhagen and eventually dropped in at the the legendary jazzclub La Fontaine. Usually I always get there too late or drunk to catch a whole concert, but yesterday we got there kind of early (1 AM). And mind I say, all jazzed up! And what a thrill!

This entry is a salute and an introduction to some of the more interesting names in danish and scandinavian jazz.
Yesterday La Fontaine hosted Il Bastardo (beware: terrible website!), which were doing both a live-recording as a followup for their 2004 release "Il Bastardo" and a documentary film.
Il Bastardo is like, hmmm... gypsy, balkan, jewish weddingparty music. Up-tempo, original and improvised. They played three very dynamical sets with nasty electric turns on the bass and amazing drumming by Stefan Pasborg, which boiled the pots with some of the most technically well-equipped drumming I've heard live at the club; amazingly tight, inventive and explosive. It was red hot and beautiful in all it's funked up folkness!

Remember to check out label Ilk Music, which is a selfmade greenhouse housing all these amazing talents in the scandinavian young jazz scene. There's a brilliant flashplayer who will supply you with beautiful music from artists such as Ibrahim Eclectric, Ikscheltaschel, Tys Tys, Autofant, Rød Planet, Toksikum and much more while you surf these pages and get a round up on an interessting scene. Enjoy.

All these has Stefan Pasborg on drums:

Love those tones!

Just found out that a band called The Lovetones is going to support Brian Jonestown Massacre on their tour. Sounds intriguing! Apparently they are old freinds and the musical inspiration behind the bands is obvious. Looking forward to that concert! Try it. Some called is a mix between John Lennon and Bowie. I would just call it good rock'n'roll. The video is directed by a guy called Serge Overkill!!!

New Homesick Hank produced by Paul Oldham

I was quite thrilled when I earlier today received a sms from my old acquaintance Kudre Haan where he asked me to check out Gaffa. I thought his band Homesick Hank had died some painful death after their debutalbum Hey was released in 2003. But no way! Are they alive!
With a new record label and producer Paul Oldham, brother to the notorious Will Oldham aka Bonnie Prince Billy, behind the mixers they must be more than ready to release Leave it Behind. Due 06.06.06.
If you're reading this Kudre Haan, I still have your cd "Ease down the Road"... But you managed without it, so unless you insist... ;-)

The Twilight Sad - Glaswegian lads

I think The Twilight Sad is worth checking out on this dull grey wedensday.
On Untitled 1, which you can listen to on their MySpace page, the vocal reminds me of Ben Gibbard, with a thick scottish accent!
The music is kind of dark flowing and melodious post-rock recorded in a low-fi and grainy quality. The Glaswegian lads is just signed at Fat Cat, which is this lovely London label from where Sigur Rós took off to EMI, hosting Múm and lots of interessting acts.
The Twilight Sad are doing a record for release later this year.

Hifana - japanese brilliance (mp3)

Just discovered Hifana, who plays a live dj-set at this years Sonar festival in Barcelona next month. The japanese music scene takes up quite a big role at the festival.
I'm not going - damnit - myself, but these two japanese guys are sooo brilliant and I would just love to see what visuals they blow up to their urban variations on downtempo and hip-hop.
I can't really understand anything but numbers from their official website, but I managed to pick up this old interview from japanese magazine Metropolis.
But first I tried their music on. There is so much energy in it. It's some kind of sampled and looped weirdness and it's really entertaining and cut-up. The act is electronica, mixed with breakbeats and hip-hop, speaker announcements and some bellydance.
The experience, I would say, is almost like being drugged up with mushrooms and taken on a joyride in some obscure reality with visions of forrests and dark suburban alleys. And what a ride! Elfs are in there and birds singing and much more. It's very intelligent. Take a break from your usual playlist and try the ride.

Breathe owl Breath - a secret duo

Well, Micah Middaugh and Andrea Moreno-Beals kind of sounds as if they are from some really heavily-wooded part of North America. Maybe they are staying in log cabins year around, but they origin from Ann Arbor, Michigan and they makes you curious.
It's not that often you meet bands so non-mainstream that their official website has expired, and whose cd's are so popular that they are all out of stock and hard to get. But so is it with this duo. But of course they are on MySpace!

These guys are all about the low-key indie, instrumental and traditional. They play stringed instruments and fiddles with the nylon in a new but old way and makes thoughtful words to go along with the texture. Breathe owl Breath works. The harmonies are minimal and kinof not there and it's gorgeous.
In their own words they were raised by rivers and gardens and their instruments tell the tales. They traveled to cities and islands and their voices tell the tales. They are here for you, Breathe owl Breathe.

The small danish label Auditorium (run by danish indie-godfather Nikolaj Nørlund) has a nice little hompage, where you can download a lot of songs and videos from excellent artists as Lise Westzynthius, Martin Ryum, I Got You On Tape, Jens Unmack, of course Nikolaj Nørlund and several others. And not to forget the best still performing genuine hippie from the good old days, Niels Skousen. Download his new song Daddy Longleg here.

Automatic mix tape generator

Over at Tinymixtapes they've got some pretty interessting playlist-requesting going on. They encourage people to send in a style, genre, word, phrase, emotion, or whatever else. Then somebody might do a mix tracklisting out of it.
Personally I'm all into the the whole business about usergenerated playlists and my guess is that its the next big thing coming around the corner. The automatic mix tape generator is just fun, but playlist communities is growing bigger by the day. It's the new black. I'll get back to this in a later post.

Examples of headlines on TinyMixTape:
"Songs to help me get through a bus ride full of 12 year old pimps and punks."
"I've just taken a really fat line of Charlie and now don't know what to listen to....errrrrrrrrrrr....help" Charlie being cocaine...
"Single fathers unite. A mix to reassure it's cool if you're a stay at home dad."
"You make me want to do naughty things to you in public."
ETC.

The Pipettes video and mp3

Throw me back to Phil Spector and his extravaganza bouquet of sound with these marvelous girls in The Pipettes . Formed in Brighton at a beach party (of course) Becki, Rose and Gwenno hits my feet even though my ass is SO much in the seat.
Sure is kitchy and doowop, but they are fun and so much suiting my summer feeling. That's why they are here. Turning the time back to before Beatles fucked it all up!

Blend yourself a milkshake, think of polkadot miniskirts and backseats. The girls are recording an album and making 2006 their biggest year yet. They have spent most of January and February recording a debut album with Andy Dragazis (Blue States) and Gareth Parton (The Go! Team) at the desk.

They recently played live The Album Chart Show in London (6/5/06) Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me (mp3) (VIDEO BELOW)
Pull Shapes (mp3) Ridiculously catchy!!!

Of Montreal and The Minders on mp3

Hailing from Athens, pop rock alternativ Of Montreal have carved their own niche in the indie-pop world. They rock me!
Their album Sunlandic Twins is about one year old now, but they are established now. An uniquely and twisted band with influences as varied as Brian Eno, Television, Prince, and The Shins. Because of their succes Polyvinyl Records got their act together and re-released some of the bands earlier albums, which were falling kind of out of prints. Give them a listen and maybe a buy. It's good craft!

Of Montreal - The Sunlandic Twins (2005) - So Begins Our Alabee (mp3)
Of Montreal - The Sunlandic Twins - Requiem For O.M.M.2 (mp3)
Of Montreal - The Bird Who Continues to Eat the Rabbit's Flowers (1997) - If I Faltered Slightly Twice(mp3).
Of Montreal - The Bedside Drama: a Petite Tragedy (1998) - Just Recently Lost Something of Importance (mp3)

While we are at it, Of Monreal are hitting the road this summer - damnit, only in the US - together with The Minders. Another band from really interessting record company Elephant 6. I know that The Minders are releasing album It’s A Bright Guilty World on July 18th, but not much more. Except they sound like good happy-go-lucky highschool indie as your momma would've done it. Check them out for yourself: The Minders - Don’t You Stop (mp3)

A tribute to Elvis Costello

If my cd-player were asked to mention a few artists to sum up what it's been playing for the last six months, I'm pretty sure "Elvis Costello" would be one of the very first names to come out.

I have been focusing on his early period, i.e. 1977-86, where he released masterpieces in a freakish tempo. Together with his mighty tight band The Attractions he takes you through all sorts of genres in a seemingly effortless manner. In this era the sky high ambitions of Costello's music is matched by the excellence only.
Oh... and then he's from Liverpool. Can't be bad... ;-)

Enjoy this '78-single: "Pump it up". You can't help being impressed of his extremely flexible angles. It's pumped up, indeed.

And there's more:

Matmos' own weird canonical beast

The San Franscisco-based duo of M.C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel's ode to their influences on new album The Rose Has Teeth In The Mouth Of A Beast, sounds like some journey in sound portraits to survive. It's not at all what I would concider indie, but it's electronica alternative and so much concept! So I'm already kind of sorry of this post!

Each of the tracks on Matmos new album is relating directly to someone Schmidt and Daniel consider to be part of their "fractured family album" and the results deemed "a historical pageant". Ranging from Ludwig Wittgenstein, Larry Levan and James Bigwood, through to Darby Crash, Valerie Solanas and King Ludwig II of Bavaria.

It's music as an crystalized artform, but more straight forward than earlier albums, even though those guys samples a cows uterus and vagina as some kind of extremely damn weird tribute to Valerie Jean Solanas, who is best know as the woman killing Andy Warhol.

Matmos from S.F were live on stage with Björk in Roskilde 2003, cooking up some of the most awsome background noise I've heard. I have yet to listen to the whole album, but I'm kind of afraid. I bought their Civil War album back in 2003 and was really fucked by the samples going on here. They are so much about pushing the line in every way. A lot would thing they forget about the listener. So would I, but

Not many musicians has recorded lipsuction fat being sucked and people getting plastic surgery as on 'A Chance to Cut Is a Chance to Cure' (2001) with the club hit “Lipostudio (And So On...)”(mp3). Now they are back, sampling snails on The Patricia Highsmith song. It's collaboration with her favorite animal. Matmos aimed a laser at a light sensitive theremin, and then got snails to crawl across the path of the laser, triggering changes in the theremin's pitch.

Mogwai live on NPR.org

Wedensday 10. may National Public Radio will bring us a live concert with scottish cosmic rock group Mogwai.
Hear the band showcase selections from its latest CD, Mr. Beast.
Personally Mr. Beast hasn't really been really that beasty to me, but maybe i've given up to early? But their earlier post-rock does it for me. So let's tune in right here tommorow.

Well, have one in advance. They have their trademark granite slab of guitars here:

The The in the studio

Great news, folks! One of my favorite bands The The are in the studio making soundtracks to a couple of documentaries. The music will be released on an album called Cineola Volume 1 soundtrack album. Very exciting. At the same time this can be a tip about their/his homepage. Seldomly have I seen a website so full of thrilling videos, documentaries, concert-stuff, music and so on. It is absolutely fantastic. Use it!

Radiohead - brand new stuff to download

This is spanking hot new live-material from Radiohead! In the video for Bangers 'n' Mash Thom plays a drumkit! This song is awsome and some of the most outgoing from the band in years, I think. It almost wanna make you dance! But the title? If it's final it sucks. Download it as mp3 below - recorded in K.B. Hallen yesterday!
But wait, I have more brandnew stuff! Three new songs available in a high quality mp3. It blows! Live 1/5/2006 @ Koko for “Big Ask” Benefit Concert. (thx to myselfmyself)

Forma Nova festival plays Red Neck Manifesto

Honestly I have never heard about the Forma Nova festival in Fredericia, Denmark. But I'm curious as can be now! Because it's an alternative music festival. In fact it's so alternative, that I don't know any of the bands, they have lined up!
I've heard some about The Red Neck Manifesto from Ireland. They play some nice ambient indie-stuff with jagged guitars. And live at the festival.
I'm definetly gonna hang around to see if Forma Nova could be my next stop after this years Roskilde Festival. Truely a great little surprise for me to learn on this beautiful sunday noon.

Slideshow with Sigur Rós

Some greek guys did a photostream-video for Sigur Rós album Takk. It's a pretty impressive archive, where users submit their own pics for show in the stream, though I don't quite get the connection with the Sigur Rós music. But Hoppípolla works out fine with landscape snaps or pics of hot babes. Anyways it's nice flashprogramming and a interessting feature. Check it here here.

War Pigs

Since most of the Indie Laundry crew was at the Flaming Lips concert wedensday, I thought we all could enjoy the great War Pigs cover again. And as a bonus this clip includes mrs. Chan Marshall. Enjoy...!

The happiest Band on Earth

This wednesday evening saw the concert hall at Tivoli being used in a very different manner than usual. Huge orange ballons was bouncing off of the heads and hands of the audience. Confetti, smoke, laserbeams all over the place - and of course the odd superhero. Yes... the American neo-psychedelic freaks of The Flaming Lips had entered the stage, flanked by approximately two dozens of wildly cheering and dancing aliens and ditto santas.

Frontman Wayne Coyne labelled the concert hall as the most beautiful room they had ever played in, but that could never stop him from turning it all into his very own magic, childish, ecstatic far-out version of a circus.

This mix was simultaneously the blessing and curse for this concert. The beginning was pure brilliance. The Lips kick-started the show in a celebrating and highly original inferno, which made the audience immediately jump up off their seats and towards the stage to join what must be described as the best children's birthday party you have ever been to.

Alas, the fun was soon cut short by staff members who a bit too eagerly ordered the crowd back to the seats. While this somewhat took the edge of the mood for a moment, the showmanship of Coyne, the musical wizardry of Steven Drodz and the overall weirdness of Michael Ivins were simply incapable of making this night anything other than a complete and utter succes.

Take 7 minutes off, floating away on the georgeous Sound of Failure from their new album "At war with the mystics".

Are you a big fan - or just generally curious - then dig this Australian special on the band (jump 5 minutes into the programme).

Mixmatch in iTunes: Celebrity playlists

I admit that I'm on the Apple bandwagon. I like it from a user perspective, but closed formats just stinks. Today I found something quite nice on the american version of iTunes music store. It's celebrity playlists and most persons on it are really indifferent to me, but the idea is good...

My first thought was: These are not real indie celebs. These are Natasha Beddingfield, Queensryche, INXS (speaking from the grave?) and more.

My second thought was: What is Kiefer Sutherland and Liv Tyler doing there?

My third thought was: Beth Orton has some nice stuff on hers. So does Yellowcard (kind of blended though) and I'm going to look into Sondre Lerches as well.
